COLT - Sewing Lessons

SCCO - Providing non-formal education
Cambodia has a large garment industry. In fact it is the largest industry in the country, although soon to be surpassed by tourism. Many girls find work in the garment industry.

Thanks to a strong labour union, Cambodia's garment factories are not 'sweatshops' like in many other countries, so it's a good opportunity for many girls to earn an income and support their families.

But of course they should have sewing skills before they can apply for a job. And that's where COLT helps.

SCCO - Providing non-formal education
After graduating from the Education and Literacy Course, some students are allowed to attend the Sewing and Tailoring Classes. The minimum age for entering these studies is 14, the maximum age 18.

These classes are divided into two parts. First, the girls learn basic sewing skills and how to operate a sewing machine. This takes 2-3 weeks. Then, the tailoring starts, in which they learn how to make dresses, skirts, shirts, trousers etc.

After this education, they can either start working in the garment industry, work at a small tailor shop, or start their own tailoring business.
